VL-426 The Root Cause of Loss

VL-426 The Root Cause of Loss

Transmission line loss fundamentally arises from conductor and dielectric effects. In this lecture, we describe why this results in frequency-dependent loss. By understanding the root cause of the problem, we can fix the problem.  We show how the differential impedance of the channel and coupling affects conductor loss, while differential impedance does not affect dielectric loss. The material properties, both copper foil and dielectric material, also affect the losses. We introduce the most important first order terms and the second order terms. Once we identify them, we can control them.
