VL-414 Engineering Transparent Discontinuities

VL-414 Engineering Transparent Discontinuities

This is the fourth video lecture in the differential pair boot camp continuing education curriculum CEC-410 series. We discuss the problem of discontinuities. While we try to design differential channels as uniform transmission lines, there will always be structures that are not. Reflections from these structures can often dominate channel performance. We discuss how to use simulation tools to predict performance using simple models, as well as 3D field solvers. In particular, we look at how to engineer transparent vias and how to confirm they won’t be a problem. Discontinuities are critical elements at 5 Gbps and above. Engineering them correctly can make the difference between success and failure.
