VL-412 Losses in Differential Pairs

This is the second video lecture in the differential pair boot camp continuing education curriculum CEC-410 series. We discuss the impact of frequency-dependent losses on a high-speed serial bit stream and how it contributes to jitter and collapse of the eye. The root cause of the frequency dependence from conductor and dielectric loss is introduced and what can be done in the design to minimize the impact. Since it’s the frequency dependence that is so important, we introduce the formalism of S-parameters as a way of describing loss – both single-ended insertion loss and differential insertion loss. Using S-parameter descriptions for loss, we explore bandwidth and length limitations from loss, and when to worry about lossy transmission lines. Finally, we introduce the idea of equalization as a way of minimizing the impact from loss.
