OLL-011 When to Worry about Lossy Lines

OLL-011 When to Worry about Lossy Lines

Lossy transmission lines are important in all high-speed serial links. This online lecture illustrates a simple way of determining if lossy line effects might be important in your design. The impact from a lossy line is to degrade the rise time of the signal. With a simple rule of thumb, we can estimate at what bit rate and what interconnect length on FR4 traces will the rise time degradation begin to cause a noticeable effect. The earlier you can be aware of these effects, the earlier you can take care of them in the design before they become a problem. Understanding lossy lines will help you grow your signal integrity career.
