BTS070 Calculating Characteristic Impedance

BTS070 Calculating Characteristic Impedance

Dr. Eric Bogatin’s No Myths Allowed, published in PCD&F, April 1, 2007
Everyone says that if you bring a grounded trace next to a signal line, the impedance of the signal line will drop. This is because of the proximity of the ground next to the signal line. But, is this really true or is this a myth? The only way to know is to put in the numbers using a 2D field solver. The answer will surprise you.
