The most effective method of establishing target design rules for electrical performance of substrates, and balancing the cost/performance tradeoff, is with the use of a field solver. It will calculate the influence of the geometry and material properties on performance. This paper reviews the use of a simple-to-use field solver to explore the design space for MCM-L technology, and identify the leading terms that influence characteristic impedance, crosstalk and their sensitivities. The use of a simple-to-use, automated field solver tool brings the power of complex analysis directly into the hands of any designer.
